Albatros C.XV

The Albatros C.XV was the last in the series of Albatros two-seat scouts, but although it entered production it arrived too late to see active service.

The C.XV was developed from the C.XIV, which was a significantly lighter and smaller aircraft than the previous C.X and C.XII. It used the standard Albatros construction method - the fuselage had a wooden frame covered with plywood and the wings used wooden spars and ribs and were fabric covered. The C.XIV was the first of the Albatros two-seat scouts to have staggered wings. It had a less powerful engine than the C.XII, but its performance didn’t suffer.

A single C.XIV was constructed and work then moved onto the C.XV. This was slightly lighter than the X.CIV, although had a longer wing span. It also had an angular cut-out in the centre section of the upper wing and overhung balanced ailerons. The C.XV had 40hp less than the C.XII, but its top speed only dropped from 109mph to 103mph and its climb rate actually increased by a significant amount - the time to 3,280ft came down from 5 minutes to 3.4 minutes.

Production of the C.XV got underway late in 1918 but the armistice arrived before many were built, and it may not have entered combat.

The Latvian Air Force was first formed in 1919, but details of its early history are sketchy. Lieutnant Alfred Valeika was ordered to form a Latvian Army Aviation Group on 7 June 1919. He gathered together a number of personnel with flying and technical experience gained from service in the Russian Bolshevik Air Service. In July the first aircraft were obtained, by hijacking a shipment of ex-Soviet aircraft captured by the Germans. After minor repairs these machines saw service against Russo-German forces occupying the country. Another aircraft was obtained subsequently, and used to form a second aviation unit.

On 30 September 1919 the two Army Aviation Groups were amalgamated to form the Latvian Aviation Park. The defeat of the Russo-German forces in mid October 1919 left a number of aircraft at abandoned German airfields. Those in the best state were overhauled and restored to flying condition. In 1920 a School of Military Aviation was established. March 1921 saw a re-organisation which resulted in Latvian Aviation Division being created. Further expansion resulted in the force being renamed the Latvian Aviation Regiment in 1926. In 1936 the previously separate Naval Aviation Division was incorporated into the Latvian Aviation Regiment as a new Squadron.

The aircraft in service when the USSR invaded in June 1940 were withdrawn from use and stored. During the period of German occupation 1941-44, several of these stored aircraft found their way to Germany, where at least some of them where flown. A number of Latvian pilots flew alongside the Luftwaffe on operations against the Red Army during this time.

Albatros C.XV - History

I wish I understood Turkish. Here is what I have found on Greeks:

The Greek military aviation was traditionally split between the army (HAFC) equipped with the French aircraft and being trained by French and the navy (HNAS) using British a/c and being trained by ex RNAS.

  • 532 Mira at Alexandroupolis
  • 533 Mira at Thessaloniki
  • 534 Mira at Drama
  • an air detachment of 533 Mira in Athens
  • a flying training center in Sedes
  • a repair unit in Mikra

At the start of the war the HNAS had some 50 aircraft but apparently no active unit besides the flying training schools at Phaleron and Tatoi. The main HNAS fighters of the era were Camel 1F.1s.

1919: The Smyrna/Ismir operation
Initially very low aerial activities.
In June 533 Mira equipped with Bre.XIVs, S.VIIs and S.XIIIs landed in Smyrna and started recon, bombing and strafing missions.
In August HNAS established Smyrna Naval Air Squadron with 10 DH.9s and 15 Camels.
From the end of the year HAFC squadrons in Asia Minor would operate under Hellenic Army Air Service Directorate (HAASD). Simultaneously the squadrons were renamed and relocated:
- 532 Mira renamed 'A' Mira -> Drama/Thracia
- 533 Mira renamed 'B' Mira -> Kazamir/Smyrna beachhead
- 534 Mira renamed 'C' Mira -> Panormos/Northern front
There were no aerial engagements recorded during 1919

Early 1920: Thracia campaign
All the air operations were carried by 'A' Mira equipped by two Bre.XIVs, two AR.1s and a Nie.XXIVbis.
Ground support missions only - no aerial engagements.
In the final stage of the campaign 'A' Mira moved to Orestias.

Summer 1920: Panormos - Proussa offensive
The offensive was supported by 'C' Mira.
The first aerial engagements took place in late summer 1920. On 16/08/20 a Turkish Bre.XIV (rather a DFW or a Rumpler if the combat happened at all) was claimed to be forced to land by a Grek Spad (of 'C' Mira probably). Unfortunately I could not find any detail on the victor's name nor any confirmation on the Turkish side.

Winter 1920/1921
Greek 'C' Mira and Smyrna Naval Air Squadron performed several recon, bombing and strafing missions.

March 1921: Greek offensive
From the very beginning "C" Mira was bombing and strafing intensively enemy positions. The HNAS aircraft joined it soon.
As the offensive gave little success, Greeks decided to strengthen the expeditionary forces. Thus the 'D' Mira was formed on May 1st. The new Mira comprised only of 4 Bre.XIVs and 2 AR.2s, but soon 3 Bre.XIVs, 3 Spads and a Caudron G.3 joined.
The 'D' Mira joined the 'B' Mira in Usak in June.
In June both HAFC and HNAS performed a series of bombing and strafing missions. E.g on June 9th naval DH.9s bombed the railroad station and the airfield in Kutahya.
On 21/06/21 a Greek Spad VII pilot claimed a Turkish fighter which had scrambled to intercept a Greek raid. On the other hand a Turkish scout forced a Greek to land near Eski-Sehir.
The June 27th offensive brought high Greek aerial activity with Afyon Karahisar as a prominent bombing target.
During the assault on Ankara Greek aviation performed a series of bombing missions. In early August Greek bombers helped the Army to avoid an encirclement by the Turkish counter strike. For example on August 8th DH.9s were bombing Turkish column and prevented its further advance.

  • 'A' Mira in Orestrias
  • 'B' Mira in Eski-Sehir sector
  • 'C' Mira in Eski-Sehir sector
  • 'D' Mira in Usak sector
  • a HNAS base in Phaleron
  • a HNAS flight in Usak
  • a HNAS flight in Afyon

As I have written this info is based exclusively on Greek sources. I hope the Turkish version of the story will be translated into English some day.

Albatros C.XV - History

Jimmy Buffett’s most famous airplane is his 1954 Grumman HU-16 Albatross, dubbed the Hemisphere Dancer. In their early years, the twin-engine amphibious flying boats were used primarily as search-and-rescue aircraft for the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

In 1996, the Hemisphere Dancer was shot at by Jamaican authorities as it taxied in the water near Negril. The Jamaicans had mistaken it for a drug-runner’s plane, though Jimmy had “only come for chicken”, he was not “the ganja plane.” U2’s Bono was also on board the plane, but neither him nor Buffett were hurt. Like the great songwriter he is, Buffett penned a tune about the incident: Jamaica Mistaica appeared on the album Banana Wind.

In 2003, Jimmy retired the Hemisphere Dancer and put it on display at the Lone Palm Airport outside of his Margaritaville Cafe in Orlando, Florida. It sits there to this day, and visitors can walk right up to the Albatross at the Universal Studios CityWalk attraction.

Though without a flyable seaplane, Buffett still had a Cessna 208 Caravan on amphibious floats. And in 2009, he bought a 1939 Grumman Widgeon seaplane.

Laysan Albatross Virtual Bolus Dissection

Students use online videos and photo galleries to conduct a virtual bolus dissection for the laysan albatross. They investigate how marine debris can be mistaken for food and harm marine organisms.

Biology, Ecology, Earth Science, Oceanography, Geography, Human Geography, Physical Geography

2 Links, 2 PDFs, 3 Videos, 13 Images

1. Activate students’ prior knowledge.

Have students brainstorm different types of debris, or trash. List their ideas on the board. Ask:

  • How does trash get into the ocean? Where does it go? How does it travel?
  • What impact does trash (marine debris) have on the ocean and organisms in the ocean?

Elicit from students that trash that does not make it to a landfill can become litter found along the sides of roads or in waterways, eventually ending up in the ocean. Emphasize that no matter where litter comes from, wind, streams, and ocean currents carry litter throughout the globe, including the ocean and coasts where it becomes marine debris.

2. Build background about marine debris and the albatross.

Have students view SchoolTube's Good Morning America video, "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" (4 minutes, 30 seconds total stop after 3 minutes, 30 seconds). As they watch, have students note the types, shapes, and sizes of marine debris they see. Briefly discuss student observations. Next go to the NG Education encyclopedic entry for marine debris. Invite volunteers to read aloud a couple of the captions related to marine debris as you click through the photo gallery. Show the albatross carcass image and read the caption to the students. Tell students that they will observe the dissection of an albatross bolus. Explain that a bolus is formed from undigested materials that the bird then regurgitates as part of its normal feeding process. Distribute and allow students time to read the provided Laysan Albatross fact sheet. Ask students to share facts that they found interesting after reading about this species’ life history, especially its diet. Explain that albatross are carnivores that feed mostly on squid and fish but also consume floating garbage, either intentionally or unintentionally.

3. Introduce and provide context for the virtual bolus dissection activity.

Distribute the Albatross Bolus-Dissection Activity Sheets. Explain that the albatross bolus is composed of animal parts albatross cannot digest, like squid beaks, and other materials they eat accidentally, like rocks and wood. As trash and plastics accumulate as marine debris, albatross accidentally eat these materials. Marine debris is found with more frequency in regurgitated bolus. Use the worksheet to focus student attention:

  • Before viewing the dissection, tell students to record hypotheses about the types of items that they think they will find in the bolus and the reason for their predictions.
  • While observing the virtual dissection, tell students to pay close attention to the number of plastic items versus natural items extracted from the bolus, and the size and color of these items.

4. Have students view the virtual bolus dissection flipbooks and photo gallery.

View the dissection media in the following order, allowing students time to complete their worksheets:

  • Flipbook: Opening the Bolus
  • Flipbook: Squid Beak Extraction
  • Flipbook: Foreign Materials Extraction
  • Bolus Dissection Photo gallery

5. Have students discuss and draw conclusions about the virtual bolus dissection.

After students have completed the Albatross Bolus worksheet, lead a discussion of their findings and conclusions. First ask students to summarize the ways in which marine debris affects the life and health of the laysan albatross. Then ask:

  • Why would plastics be a problem if ingested by the albatross?
  • Do you think that the bird that regurgitated this bolus felt full?
  • What are the health implications of a bird “feeling full” after eating the materials that were extracted from the bolus?
  • What have you heard about BPAs or other plastic leaching agents?
  • Could these toxic substances create health problems for the albatross? How? Why?

6. Have students reflect on what they have learned.

  • Could marine debris and the substances it contains create health problems for other ocean animals? Which ones? What about humans?
  • What is being done to combat the global problem of marine debris?
  • What can you do to combat the global problem of marine debris?

Informal Assessment

Assess students' completed Albatross Bolus-Dissection Activity Sheets for completion and accuracy.

Extending the Learning

Have students go to the NOAA Marine Debris website to read more about other impacts of marine debris, including wildlife entanglement, alien species transport, and economic threats. Have students research programs and organizations working to combat the negative impacts of marine debris. Ask them to share what they learned with the class.

The History of al-Tabari Vol. 15 : The Crisis of the Early Caliphate: The Reign of 'Uthman A.D. 644-656/A.H. 24-35

Before the caliphate of the 'Uthman b. 'Affan, the Muslim community had grown from strength to strength in spite of a series of major crises--the Hirah, the death of the Prophet, the Riddah wars, the assassination of 'Umar by a Persian slave. But 'Uthman's reign ended in catastrophe. His inability to manage the social and political conflicts that were now emerging among various factions within the community led to his death at the hands of Muslim rebels. The consequences of this tragic event were bitter: not only a century of civil war, but also political and religious schisms of such depth that they have not been entirely healed even now. Most medieval Muslim historians told this story in an overtly partisan manner, but al-Tabari demands more of his readers. First of all, they must decide for themselves, on the basis of highly ambigous evidence, whether 'Uthman's death was tyrannicide or murder. But, more than that, they must ask how such a thing could have happened at all what had the Muslims done to bring about the near-destruction of their community?

Al-Tabari presents this challenge within a broad framework. For, even while the internal crisis that issued in 'Uthman's death was coming to a head, the wars against Byzantium and Persia continued. The first expeditions into North Africa, the conquest of Cyprus, the momentary destruction of the Byzantine fleet at the Battle of the Masts, the bloody campaigns in Armenia, the Caucasus, and Khurasan are all here, in narratives that shift constantly between hard reporting and pious legend. Muslim forces retain the offensive, but there are no more easy victories henceforth, suffering and endurance will be the hallmarks of the hero. Most evocative in the light of 'Uthman's fate is the moving account of the murder of the last Sasanian king, Yazdagird III--a man betrayed by his nobles and subjects, but most of all by his own character.

Looks fantastic! I'd like one but I think the price would put me off at the moment as I can see it being around £200 - 250

Took delievery of my 1/32 A-10 Thunderbolt II today, £40 off e-bay! Can't be bad!

For anyone that hasn't seen it Hobbyboss 2011 catalogue is doing the rounds electronically -

I'm a 1/48 builder so a couple of things catch my eye - A-7K (even though I just bought their T/A7C) and the inevitable EF-111 Raven - I realise that canopy parts are a bit odd in shape but I'm gonna go for this is only to save a fortune on Paragon flaps/slats.

Although not exatly a new release, but what they call and new release, Airfix have just announced 1/48 Seafire and Lightning f6 out again for 2011. So stop buying from e-bay at £40 a pop NOW.

It doesn't actually look like there is a New - New release for 2011. Wasn't there talk of a 48th Lynx?
